ABOUT THE ARTIST'S FAMILY

The artist is the last descendant of the TOFFART family from the town of Lillers, a town located in the former province of Artois. In the eighteenth century, over three generations, this family held the 1st degree ennobling office of Grand Bailiff of Lillers and Lieutenant General of the Government of Arras, in conjunction with the functions of royal notary. She was of nobility in a long robe like all royal officers holding a higher office. One of the gentlemen of the province, she sat on the Provincial Council of Artois until October 1790, notably in 1788 to appoint the deputies of the nobility to the States General. United to the DENAIN DE SAINT-MARTIN and BACQUEVILLE DE LA VASSERIE families, it has illustrious filiations that date back to the High Middle Ages, mainly in Normandy. This page summarizes this genealogy with an exhaustive armorial.
